Preamble by Mike Wilkins, 1987, Smithsonian American Art Museum
Granger students will participate in rich discussions, reflect on their communities, and work on creative projects that highlight their role in American democracy. Through both online and in-person activities, students will explore diverse voices within their local histories, engage in live conversations with their Virginia peers, and undertake inquiry-based investigations. The program will culminate in powerful student projects that reflect on their communities’ contributions to the democratic landscape.

Ms. King plays an integral role not only in this program but also in the College in the High School initiative at Granger High School, which offers an impressive 93 credits through partnerships with universities such as the University of Washington, Central Washington University, and Eastern Washington University. By providing students with the opportunity to earn college credits in courses like UW English 131, Ms. King empowers students to excel academically while preparing them for post-secondary education. These courses offer rigorous, college-level instruction right here at Granger High School, giving students a significant academic advantage.

This opportunity highlights the dedication to fostering civic engagement and critical thinking. Ms. King's role as a facilitator in this program underscores her commitment to academic excellence and culturally relevant education. Beyond virtual exchanges, her students will write articles on the partnership with Louisa County, a recent field trip, the Smithsonian project, or their ongoing book project—further expanding their understanding of the world around them.

Stay tuned for updates on the exciting developments in Ms. King’s class and the positive impact of this collaboration with Louisa County!
